It was about this time last year that I fell truly and deeply in love with the Union Square Greenmarket. Now, I go at least once a week and look forward to it every time. I love visiting "my farmer" (Joe at Arcadian Pastures--the eggs and meat are the best!!!) and exploring the other stands!
When I first started visiting, the market seemed overwhelming and I found myself nervous to ask questions. I was interested in the location of the farms, their farming practices and what some of the crazy root vegetables were, but I stayed quiet, which is definitely out of character for me :) Once I started asking questions though, I couldn't stop, and I learned that the farmers are more than happy to share information and they often give me recipe ideas to go along with my purchases!
I'm sure you have been wondering what happened to all of the wonderful veggies (and lamb chops)
I bought the other day! Since then I have collected some more great items and am proud to say that we used almost every inch of them!

The tomatoes right now are awesome so get them while they last!!! .jpeg)
My husband has been very excited to get into pickling and with our 11 year dating anniversary last weekend, we decided to spend some time in the kitchen trying out an old family recipe for pickled turnips and beets.
The beets and turnips we bought are currently in the pantry pickling in vinegar, chili peppers and garlic! Another week or so and we get to enjoy them :)
We used the rest of our purchases to make dinner for our anniversary. Pastured lamb chops in a balsamic, rosemary glaze, mashed potatoes (they weren't from the market because they are still out of season), beet and turnip greens (left over from our pickling project) sauteed in garlic and olive oil and finally Cremini, Maitake and Oyster mushrooms sauteed in butter and garlic.
It was the perfect way to end the day after a five mile hike at Breakneck Ridge with wonderful friends!
Do you visit the farmer's market? Are you open to asking questions? Do you use every part of what you buy? Give it a go and report back :)
See you soon!
